TV Review: The Middle - "Year of the Hecks"

Season 3 - Episode 12
ABC (US)

The Middle's third season has been bright, heartfelt, charming soft comedy for the most part, with some episodes standing out more than others. "Year of the Hecks" starts off 2012 nicely. The flaws from the Christmas episode are pretty much gone (although Frankie does manage to forget about Brick at one point - but that actually, in a rather warped way, fits the character) and the warm family comedy is there for all to see.

The episode sees the family set each other New Years Resolutions, as they never stick to their own. This leads to Sue creating a cheerleading squad for the wrestling team (and blocking the view of around half the very small crowd), Axl realising that he very nearly got his one and only "A" in fifth grade English, but forgot to hand in the paper, Mike freaking people out (initially) and then having to listen to people's inane chatter when he smiles more, and Frankie spending more time with Brick. The resolutions manage to bring the family closer together than ever, and when Frankie declares 2012 as the year of the Hecks while at an all you can eat restaurant at the end of the episode, you believe that it may just be a good year for them (and this show) indeed.
